12/14/2012
St. Paul’s Episcopal School hosted the the third annual Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, November 12. The Junior Class Rutledge Fellows organized the event along with class sponsor Mrs. Julie Albrecht and Community Service Director Mrs. Leslie Lerner to honor all veterans in the St. Paul’s Family. Inclement weather moved the assembly from the stadium to the gym, but didn’t dampen the spirit of gratitude and appreciation expressed by speakers Dr. Scott McDonald, Middle School Director and Associate Headmaster, Mr. Lou Courie, Emilie Rihner (8th grade), The Reverend Ben Rockwell, Jack Rebarchak (11th grade), Matt Browning (2nd grade), Warren Buffkin (2nd grade), Dillard Doggett (7th), Hannah Broders (2nd Grade), Connor Pierce (2nd Grade), Abigail Blankenship (11th grade), and Mr. Victor Helmsing, Assistant Headmaster.
Special guest speaker and St. Paul’s alumnus Dr. Sid Brevard ‘79 moved the audience of veterans, family members, students, faculty, and other guests, sharing insight gained from his service in Somalia and the Balkans. Dr. Brevard also recounted information about other St. Paul’s alumni through the decades. SPS Boy Scout Troop 147 presented and retired the colors, and the assembly closed with a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” and “Taps”, played by SPS band director Mr. Treadwell Davis.
Guests then enjoyed refreshments provided by the parents of the Junior Class. Pictured is Second Grader Matt Browning, son of Amy and Scott Browning reciting his poem about Veterans Day to the audience. Photo courtesy of Lyle Ratliff with USA. William Konrad Receives Eagle Scout Award
12/14/2012
St. Paul’s Senior William Konrad was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout which is the highest award in all of Scouting. Requirements for earning the title of Eagle Scout are extremely rigorous, and the completion of them qualifies a Scout to receive commendations of the highest level. The final requirement for the Eagle Scout candidate is the Eagle Scout Service Project which is considered the “ultimate application” phase of what a Scout has learned thus far in Scouting: leadership, responsibility, and managing projects while applying his Scout oath—“to help other people.” For his final service project, William planned, organized and supervised a team of volunteers to rebuild the Monte L. Moore Theater storage loft at St. Paul’s Episcopal School.
William has been a member of Troop 147 since joining Boy Scouts in the fifth grade. During his scouting career, he earned 39 merit badges and many special awards and held numerous leadership positions. He was elected to the Order of the Arrow in 2011. William currently serves as Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 147 and volunteers as Patrol Leader to Troop 2147 at Augusta Evans Special School.
William is also an accomplished trombone player and a member of the St. Paul’s Chamber Singers.
Congratulations to William for his outstanding achievement of Eagle Scout.

Kourtney Wadkins Chosen As Azalea Trail Maid
12/14/2012
Congratulations to St. Paul’s junior Kourtney Wadkins, who is St. Paul's new Azalea Trail Maid. Kourtney is one of 50 young women who will represent the city of Mobile!
The Azalea Trail Maids are a group of fifty high school seniors chosen yearly to serve as "Official Ambassadors" for the city of Mobile, Alabama. The Maids, wearing extravagant antebellum-style dresses and using mannerisms of the era, make appearances at many local, state, and national events. They often serve as greeters when foreigners and dignitaries visit the city, and are required to be knowledgeable about the city landmarks and history. The Maids are meant to embody the ideals of "Southern hospitality," and appeared at the inauguration of United States President Barack Obama.
Each girl that is to interview for the Trail Court must meet certain qualifications. Each girl must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted grade point average, must be involved with extra curricular activities and must be active in the community. Each girl must also fill out an application highlighting these events and activities of their high school career and answer various questions about their character. They must interview before a panel of judges selected by their high schools sponsor and the top girls from that school along with an alternate will be sent to the city interview.
The city interviews are conducted by a panel of judges who are brought in from out of town. This measure is to ensure there is no favoritism for any one girl. The girls are judged on their overall GPA, their knowledge of the city of Mobile, their knowledge of current events, their poise and overall interview abilities. The girls with the top 50 scores make up the Trail Court for the next year.

From November until the Christmas break, third and fourth grade students collected aluminum pop tops to donate to the Ronald McDonald House “Pull for the Kids” program. The two grades competed for the most pop tops collected; the fourth grade had 49.5 lbs. and the 3rd grade had 140.6 lbs. for a total of 190.1 lbs. The third grade was treated to an ice cream party to celebrate their win. Mary McAleer, Marketing and Fund Development Manager for RMH Mobile attended the party to thank the students for their efforts.

Proceeds from recycled beverage tabs benefit Mobile’s “House That Love Built,” a home-away-from-home for families who have children being treated at local hospitals. The Tab Top Program raises approximately over $5,000 each year for Ronald McDonald House of Mobile.

5th Grade Mural Promotes Bully-Free Behavior
11/14/2012
In conjunction with the Middle and Upper School participation in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, the 5th Grade created a "Bully Free" mural in the form of a jigsaw puzzle, which is now on display in the Media Center. Students drew symbols and descriptive words inside their individual puzzle pieces. This is a representation of the unique personalities / character traits that make up the class of 2020 and how they are coming together as a cooperative group, striving to get along and ultimately be bully-free. According to the Olweus website, "School bullying takes on many forms, and it is done by both girls and boys. A recent U.S. study shows that 17 percent of all students reported having been bullied "sometimes" or more often. This amounts to almost one in five students." Below are 5th Graders at work creating the mural.

All Hallows’ Eve By Hope Lemley Whispering winds ‘round the old oak tree wind Slith’ring they rise, rustling boughs as they climb. The leaves—crackling embers this crisp autumn night, The moon bathes the graveyard in cold, silver light.
Silence rules over the shadows so long No sound in the air, save the wind’s whisp’ring song. The world seems to pause, but there is no peace— Something is lurking this All Hallows’ Eve.
The stillness is broken, and out of the tombs Come pale, spectral figures to fill up the gloom. They start to take form, but substance they lack Eerily shimm’ring against the full black.
They’re part of the wind and they join in its song— The wispy, thin figures are murm’ring along. Intangible ghosts—they are not of this earth Caught ‘tween life and death, searching for worth.
Pale, ghostly children laugh in delight, Chasing ‘round tombstones this Halloween night. Not a care in the world, sprites dance glibly around Twinkling like stars as they fly ‘cross the ground.
An old man takes form and looks down in surprise As he holds up a hand to his translucent eyes. He stretches and yawns and sighs in relief And chuckles, ambivalent to what should be grief.
He reclines on his tombstone and watches the shades All just coming out of their silent, still daze. Some cry out in shock, some soundlessly weep, Some wander the graveyard, longing for sleep.
Some sob and some moan and refuse to believe That their lives are now ended—they do nothing but grieve. A girl less than twenty in awful despair Cries, “My life can’t be over! It’s simply not fair!”
The wandering spirits, directionless shades Circle the graveyard—their shrieks pierce like blades As they endlessly hover, each lost and alone— Then silence consumes them—too desperate to moan.
The children run higher and higher aloft Surrounded by faeries, like stars shining soft. They bound towards the heavens with hope in their eyes Leaving the earth while they enter the skies.
The old man stands up and remarks in great haste, “I guess I’ll be off! There’s no time to waste— I’ve the rest of the afterlife waiting for me!” And he, too, flew onward, his soul fin’ly free.
The wandering spirits and poor, wailing souls Refuse to admit that it’s come to a close. They’ll wander the night from this moment on, Lamenting and sobbing as they float along.
Even though you can’t hear them—you’re blind to their plight To their weeping and wailing and shrieking tonight, Just know that they’re wandering—just past the trees— Silently, gravely, on All Hallows’ Eve.

Third Grade Mural Creation
9/24/2012
Mrs. Hack's and Mrs. Strickland's third grade classes created a mural in conjunction with the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program that St. Paul's has adopted. The assignment was “What we want our class to be.” Their sign says… be respectful, be responsible, be kind, be a good listener, be caring, be friendly.
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is designed for students in elementary, middle, and junior high schools (students ages five to fifteen years old). Research has shown that OBPP is also effective in high schools, with some program adaptation. All students participate in most aspects of the program, while students identified as bullying others, or as targets of bullying, receive additional individualized interventions.
